    Restoration Guide Book Update!
   By Jerry Hatfield

These are the recommended changes to the FIRST edition of Indian Motorcycle Restoration Guide, 1932-1953.  Near the lower right corner of the front cover is a white cough-drop-shaped field about 3/8 inch wide and 1/4 inch high, and in the field is a black letter or letters.  If there's a single letter "M" in the field, yours is a first edition.  If there's three letters "MBI" in the field, yours is a second edition. Go here for the changes to the SECOND edition.

Unfortunately, the stocks of first and second printings are intermingled at the publisher, so you can't order a second printing. The publisher gave me a maximum of 20 pages on which changes could be made. The second printing has 16 corrections spread over 16 pages, plus three photo changes on 3 separate pages.  That's 19 changes, the way the publisher keeps score. Unfortunately, the publisher neglected to print the 20th changed page, which was a listing of pen and ink changes the reader was advised to make elsewhere in the book. Since the 20th intended change page was pretty busy, that means that holders of second-printings have less than half the intended updates.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ROBIN MARKEY, for without his expertise during preparation of the book, it could never have been written.  NONE of the errors are of his making.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ROBERT WINTERS of Springfield, Pennsylvania.  Bob uncovered many of the errors, including almost all errors applicable to the 30.50 ci twins.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ROGER HENSLEY of Atlanta, Georgia, for additional information on 1950 and 1951 police Chiefs with large generators and resulting special frames.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ELMER LOWER, STEVE JOHNSTON, and PETE SINK for their help in adding the colors for 1936 and 1937.

These recommended changes include error corrections and new material.  There are 46 insignificant errors, consisting of figure reference deletions in cases where one or more other figure references are correct. There are 208 significant errors.

There are over 15,000 data entries in the book; details on request. Without corrections, the book is 98.3 percent accurate on the basis of all errors; it is 98.6 percent accurate on the basis of significant errors.  If all the suggested changes are made, the accuracy is close to 100 percent.

To make the corrections and additions easier and faster: download the material, change the font to small type, adust the margins of each separate correction as necessary, print, then cut and paste.  The following word processing format works well: 9-point Arial type, top margin = 1 inch, bottom margin = 0.75 inch; left margin = 1 inch; right margin = 0.75 inch; two-column "newspaper format", left column width = 3.375 inches, width between columns = 0.25 inch, right column width = 3.375 inch.  Insert space-bar commands as necessary to avoid splitting portions of entries between pages or columns (except when sometimes preferrable on long entries or based on the space available in the book area where the entry is made).  When typed in this style, the cut and paste entries are the same width as the columns in the book. Manipulate the material, i.e., remove information describing the location of the entry and insert as necessary space-bar commands, and you can print and tape the entries neatly in the recommended areas.

PAGE 92: There is an optional approach to this change.  First Option: In the second printing, there is a Figure 109B on this page.  The picture (but not the caption!) is the same as the existing picture used for Figure 189 on page 129.  The picture actually shows a 1938-1939 headlight and pedestal, FN 75171, instead of the information listed for the existing Figure 189.  If you wish to replicate the second printing content, make a photo copy of the existing Figure 189 and tape the photo (without title and caption) on page 92.  Label the photo "Figure 109B, 1938-1939 headlight.  Enter "Note the head lamp bracket (FN 75171), which is shown in sales literature. This bracket was used on all 1938-1939 Chiefs and Fours."  Draw a large "X" through Figure 189 and line out the title and caption.  Second Option.  Instead of photo-copying the picture and taping it to page 92, simply enter a note on page 92, "See Figure 109B, page 129."  Then, on page 129, renumber, retitle, and rewrite the caption.

PAGE 95: Figure 115, delete "A clip was eliminated underneath the saddle, leaving the wiring loosely strung over the upper rear frame fork (1934-1937 wiring was clipped on upper rear tube by FN 17A181)."
PAGE 96: Figure 118, change "FN 75171" to "FN 75172".
PAGE 98: Figure 122, change the caption to "Beginning in 1937, the horn was mounted above the headlight.  The 1937-1939 Junior Scouts had the headlight pedestal (bracket) integral with the fork (no separate bracket).  Also, the new front fork FN 92745 had a different upper casting that mounts the horn.

PAGE 174:  There's lots of room on page 174, and you will need it to post the following added information, courtesy of Roger Hensley, and it is an almost exact quote of his e-mail messages on this subject to the Starklite list.  1950 and 1951 police Chiefs with the large generator (not all police Chiefs) have a special frame.  The generator was made by American Generator & Armature Co., and was not a special unit for Indian. It was rated at 25 amps.  It has a cooling fan on the pulley end which requires a cut-back in the upper flange of the belt guard.  The commutator end was open, and Indian part #333,013 was used as a cover.  The battery was made by C&D, their part number UV-37.  It was rated at 45 amp-hours.  With this setup, the regulator, Autolite VRR-4001-B, was mounted on the chain guard.  The two main clues to the special frames are the tilt-up to the kicker spring anchor - it is horizontal on standard machines, and the spacing of the lower frame cross piece, which is one inch farther back than on standard frames.  (A battery tray from a standard machine will just fall through the gap.)  It is also longer cross-wise to compensate for the "spread" of the frame.  Its front edge
is actually behind the lower lip of the rear fender.  One of the best tips to identifying most 348-351 police frames is that they used rear wheel drive speedometers as Indian Stuart-Warner units had no provision or a maximum speed hand.  This required frame modification at the factory when the order was placed.  See Contact Points #756, 12-8-47, for details.  Because of the lower mounting of the battery tray, which is not the same as on regular machines, the standard center stand would not fit. As a result, the Engineering Parts List calls for use of the 1940 to 1945 Chief stand - the one with the latch - with the addition of two "blocks" either brazed or welded to the bottom.  As for the rear fender, the front end is flattened (this refers to the battery bulge) and blended all around, for additional clearance for the large battery.  Also, two holes are added for mounting Center Stand Latch Assembly #42906.  The battery "frog" for the taller battery was a block of pine, painted black! If you have a standard frame 46-51, the spacing from the rear of the frame casting (down where the battery bolts go), to the REAR of the lower cross brace is approximately 5.0 inches.  In the special frame, the distance is again 5.0 inches but it is from the rear of the frame casting to the FRONT of the lower cross brace.  With the rear fender in place (on the special frame), the front of the lower cross brace is behind the bottom front edge of the fender.  The battery tray on the special is different from the standard version.

PAGE 245: Write a new Note, Note 133: "The 1936-1937 and later parts books indicate only a seatpost-equipped frame, FN 92640, for the Standard Scout and Chief.  However, the 1936-1937 and later parts books indicate optional extension spring saddles through 1939.  Conclusion: extension-spring saddles were available through 1939 even though all frames were built for seatpost use."
